Hip Replacement

Best hip replacement surgeon pointing to an X-ray of a hip with a ballpoint pen.

Hip replacement surgery is the one of the most commonly performed joint replacement surgeries in the United States. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is a primary cause for minimally invasive or total hip replacement surgery. Traumatic injuries, like severe falls, may also necessitate this procedure.

At The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics Orthopaedic Associates of Central Maryland Division, our skilled and experienced orthopedic surgeons offer various approaches for total hip replacement, including traditional, minimally invasive, and anterior hip replacement approaches, along with bone-sparing hip resurfacing. For post-op care, physical therapy is a great option to optimize motility and overall well-being.

Hip Replacement Procedures

With recent advancements in surgical techniques, several hip replacement procedures are in practice to enhance patient outcomes. Hip replacement is carried out via various approaches. Most recently, the anterior or the anterolateral approach has reduced muscle damage and improved patient outcomes, including pain and dislocation of the hip.

Anterior Approach Hip Replacement

In cases requiring surgery for hip replacement due to damage or disease, certain orthopedic surgeons are trained to perform anterior hip arthroplasty, also referred to as the direct anterior approach.

This technique is deemed less invasive as it preserves surrounding muscles supporting the joint, resulting in reduced scarring, pain, and recovery time.

Patients undergoing anterior hip replacement can start physical therapy and rehabilitation sooner and experience swifter recovery compared to traditional posterior hip replacement methods.

Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty

Hip resurfacing is a surgical option aimed at alleviating pain and restoring function in individuals with hip conditions like arthritis. Unlike traditional total hip replacement, this procedure preserves the bones within the joint, instead smoothing the bone surface with metal.

Conserving bone, hip resurfacing is less invasive compared to total hip replacement, making it ideal for younger, active individuals. Overall, it is a successful procedure, enabling most patients to resume their pre-pain activities.

Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

Minimally invasive hip replacement offers an alternative to traditional total hip replacement surgery, particularly suitable for smaller, younger, and healthier individuals.

During the procedure, the damaged joint is replaced with an artificial one. However, the use of small incisions in the minimally invasive approach facilitates a smoother recovery process.

Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement, also known as hip arthroplasty, entails removing the damaged portion of the hip and substituting it with an artificial joint.

Your surgeon will create an incision on the side of your hip to access the joint, removing damaged bone, cartilage, or connective tissue. The femoral head (top part of the thighbone) and hip socket cartilage or bone will be extracted. Subsequently, your hip joint will be replaced with an artificial one, allowing you to perform most pain-free movements you previously enjoyed.
