The human foot is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the foot of the average jogger hits the ground with force equal to two to three times the normal body weight. Therefore, it’s important to take the time and think about how essential our feet are. It seems as if there is a consensus that feet are something people are not particularly fond of, however, it is time to start acknowledging the importance of our feet, and the value they have on our overall quality of life.
So, you should understand that our feet are what propel us. In other words, our feet are the foundation of every stride we take. The saying “Own the ground you walk on,” rings true. Whether you are doing some cardio to stay in shape, or training for the next 5K or marathon, running is harder on the feet than any other physical activity. The more you run competitively or recreationally, foot pain and injuries can be quite common. To get the right treatment, you need to know the problem. The first thing to consider is what area your foot pain is located, and what activities you do.
Some common causes of foot pain include:
- Achilles tendinitis
- Gout
- Achilles tendon rupture
- Avulsion fracture: How is it treated?
- Bone spurs
- Broken ankle/broken foot
- Broken toe
- Bunions
- Bursitis
- Corns and calluses
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Flatfeet
- Ingrown toenails
- Metatarsalgia
